Meta steals a tactic from Tesla and builds data centers in tents

In an unexpected turn in the AI data center landscape, Meta has introduced a novel approach by constructing data centers within tents. This strategy, which seems to draw inspiration from both Tesla and xAI, aims to significantly reduce construction time. According to Michael Thomas, founder of Cleanview, the company has erected six so-called "rapid deployment structures" outside New Albany, Ohio. This initiative isn't entirely new, as Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at using weather-resistant tents for the company’s extensive data centers in a conversation with The Information last year. However, Thomas's recent findings, including images and local permit details, highlight the rapid pace and scale of this ambitious project. Reports indicate that construction of five tents, each covering 125,000 square feet, began between April and June 2026. Satellite images shared by Thomas on social media confirm that these structures are now fully operational. The concept of using tents echoes Tesla's strategy during the Model 3 production surge at its Fremont factory. Powering these tents, Meta has integrated 200 megawatts of modular gas turbines, a method also seen in xAI operations. Inside these tents, valuable AI chips, likely worth billions, will be put to work. This shift to tent-based facilities is particularly noteworthy as Meta confronts challenges in rolling out its AI models to developers. A recent Wall Street Journal report indicated delays in the availability of APIs necessary for developers to access Meta's latest AI model, Muse Spark. Despite plans to invest as much as $145 billion in data centers and capital expenditures, Meta's stock has faced a 5% decline this year, reflecting investor concerns. Utilizing tents for AI chip storage may be a strategic effort to cut costs amid these challenges. TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for further comments and will provide updates as necessary.
