Meta is testing 'Series' feature for Instagram and Facebook: Know what it is and how it works

Meta is currently piloting an exciting new feature known as 'Series' for its platforms Instagram and Facebook. This feature aims to allow creators to compile multiple Reels into episodes of a cohesive series. As the popularity of short-form videos continues to soar, especially in regions like India, this initiative appears to be a strategic move to keep users engaged beyond mere scrolling. According to a report from TechCrunch, the Series feature is being tested with a select group of content creators. The goal is to encourage viewers to engage with related videos, fostering a habit of repeat viewing through a structured series format. For example, a creator could post a sequence titled '10 Days of Healthier Baking,' consolidating all ten videos into one organized set. One of the standout aspects of this feature is its user-friendly design. Creators can incorporate older Reels into a new series, making it easier for fans to access content without having to sift through an entire profile. When a user encounters a Reel that belongs to a Series in their feed, they will have the option to view all related episodes directly from that Reel. Meta's testing phase includes creators known for producing episodic content, indicating a clear focus on enhancing the platform's offerings in this area. Tessa Lyons, Instagram's Vice President of Product, recently stressed the company's ambition to integrate seamlessly into creators’ long-form strategies, complementing their existing short-form content. In addition to enhancing user experience, Meta is reportedly exploring monetization opportunities for the Series feature, although specific details remain undisclosed. This move aligns with trends observed on platforms like TikTok, which has introduced a similar feature enabling creators to monetize their episodic content under subscription models. Furthermore, the Series feature could pave the way for new storytelling formats, potentially supporting mini-dramas that have proven lucrative, generating approximately $1.3 billion in the U.S. last year, as noted by Business Insider. This initiative reflects Meta's ongoing commitment to evolving its platform. Previous attempts at organizing content, such as the introduction of Guides in 2020 and the IGTV Series option, laid the groundwork for this latest innovation. If this feature gains traction, it could significantly streamline how creators organize episodic content and enhance the viewing experience for users seeking related videos.
