Meta allows AI in coding interviews to mirror on-the-job reality: Report

Meta is exploring a groundbreaking approach to coding interviews by permitting candidates to utilize AI tools during their assessments. This initiative aims to better align the recruitment process with the realities of modern developer environments, according to internal communications reviewed by 404 Media. Currently in its initial testing phase, this new interview format involves internal employees volunteering for mock interviews. An internal post indicates that Meta is developing a coding interview style that integrates an AI assistant for candidates. This approach seeks to reflect contemporary development practices while also addressing concerns regarding potential cheating facilitated by large language models, as noted by Techradar. In contrast to many tech companies that impose restrictions or outright bans on AI tool usage during the hiring process, Meta is adopting a more open stance. For instance, Anthropic has chosen to prohibit AI in interviews, focusing instead on evaluating candidates' raw skills, which can later be enhanced by AI in the workplace. Meta’s initiative is part of a broader trend in the industry, where generative AI is increasingly becoming part of daily workflows. Companies like Microsoft and Google report that approximately one-third of the code produced by their engineers is now generated by AI. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, has previously indicated that AI could soon take over many coding tasks traditionally handled by mid-level engineers. While the rapid generation of code through AI presents significant advantages, the importance of well-structured prompts and the necessity for rigorous validation remain critical factors. A spokesperson for Meta confirmed the testing phase of this new interview format, emphasizing the company's commitment to leveraging AI to assist engineers in their daily tasks. However, no official timeline has been provided for when AI-assisted interviews might be implemented on a wider scale.
