In a significant shift in pricing strategy, Meta has announced that it will raise the prices of its popular virtual reality headsets due to escalating costs associated with memory chips. This adjustment will take effect on April 19, with the Meta Quest 3S (128GB) and Meta Quest 3S (256GB) seeing price hikes of $50, bringing their new prices to $349.99 and $449.99, respectively. Meanwhile, the Meta Quest 3 will experience a more substantial increase of $100, setting its price at $599.99. In a blog post, Meta explained, "We’re making this change because the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly." The company highlighted a global surge in the prices of essential components, particularly memory chips, which is affecting a wide array of consumer electronics, including virtual reality devices. Meta emphasized that this price adjustment is necessary to maintain the quality of hardware, software, and support that users have come to expect from the Quest platform. Additionally, the revised pricing will extend to Meta Quest refurbished units, although all accessories associated with the Meta Quest will remain at their current prices. This move aligns Meta with other major technology firms like Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony, who have also raised prices in response to the ongoing RAM shortage.
