Meta to remove lawsuit ads around teen social media addiction: Report

Meta Platforms has decided to cease advertising on Facebook and Instagram that seeks new plaintiffs for lawsuits alleging that the company, along with other social media networks, has created addictive environments aimed at young users. Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, confirmed this shift, stating that the company is currently defending itself against numerous cases in both state and federal courts in California. Stone emphasized, "We will not allow trial lawyers to profit from our platforms while simultaneously claiming they are harmful." This announcement follows Meta's setbacks in two major legal battles. A jury in Los Angeles recently ruled that both Meta and Google bore responsibility for a young woman's depression and suicidal ideation linked to her addiction to Instagram and YouTube, resulting in a combined $6 million in damages. In a separate case, a jury in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay $375 million, concluding that the company misled users regarding product safety for minors and allowed the sexual exploitation of young individuals on its platforms. Currently, over 3,300 lawsuits related to addiction claims are pending against Meta, Google, Snap Inc., and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, in California state courts. Additionally, there are approximately 2,400 federal lawsuits, consolidated in California, brought by individuals, municipalities, states, and school districts. The state lawsuits primarily focus on claims from individuals asserting that social media addiction has led to mental health issues. In contrast, the federal cases involve public entities seeking reimbursement for expenses related to addressing the mental health impacts on young users. Law firms representing these plaintiffs often operate on a contingency basis, earning fees only if they secure damages or settlements. To attract potential plaintiffs who might be unaware of the ongoing litigation, these firms invest in advertising across various media platforms. Notably, firms like Morgan & Morgan, which participated in the Los Angeles trial, have used Facebook for their ads, while others, such as White Heart Legal, promote these cases on social media. While Google has also hosted ads for these lawsuits, including those by the Social Media Victims Law Centre, it remains unclear if they will follow Meta’s lead in removing such advertisements. Meta's decision to discontinue these ads underscores its commitment to limiting the exploitation of its platforms by trial lawyers as it navigates through these ongoing legal challenges. The company continues to deny any wrongdoing and asserts that it has implemented robust measures to safeguard young users.
