Meta is poised to release its first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday, and analysts from LSEG have high expectations. Over the past three months, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has intensified the company's focus on artificial intelligence, following a strategic pivot and a significant talent overhaul initiated last June. This included a hefty $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and the recruitment of Alexandr Wang as the head of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a newly revamped AI division. Wang's leadership is expected to drive the development of innovative models that will help Meta compete more effectively against industry giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Earlier this month, the company introduced Muse Spark, marking its first proprietary foundation model. Investors are now eager for Zuckerberg to articulate a clearer monetization strategy. Despite the anticipation surrounding new revenue avenues, Meta's core advertising business continues to thrive. Analysts predict a remarkable 31% increase in total revenue, reaching approximately $55.4 billion, a strong rebound from $42.3 billion a year prior. This growth would represent the most substantial quarterly increase since 2021, highlighting how advancements in AI are benefiting Meta’s advertising performance, even as the company seeks additional income sources. Underpinning Meta's AI initiatives is a substantial investment in infrastructure, with expected capital expenditures for the first quarter reaching $27.63 billion according to StreetAccount. In its fourth-quarter earnings call in January, Meta projected annual capital expenditures to be between $115 billion and $135 billion. In conjunction with these expenditures, the company is also undergoing significant workforce reductions. Last week, Meta announced plans to cut around 10% of its staff, equivalent to 8,000 employees, while also halting hiring for 6,000 open positions. This follows earlier layoffs affecting about 1,000 positions in the Reality Labs unit and additional cuts in various departments including Facebook and global operations. For the Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual and augmented reality, analysts anticipate a first-quarter operating loss of approximately $4.82 billion, against revenues of $488.8 million. As Meta braces for its earnings report, retail investors remain optimistic about the company's financial outlook.
