Meta's APAC policy chief steps down as company's regulation difficulties rise

Meta Platforms Inc. is preparing for a significant transition as Simon Milner, its leading public policy executive in the Asia-Pacific region, announces his departure. This shift comes at a time when the tech giant is grappling with mounting regulatory pressures throughout the continent. Milner, who has been at the forefront of Meta’s government relations and policy strategy in the region for the last eight years, shared his departure news via a post on LinkedIn. He expressed his commitment to assist in the transition, stating, "I’ll be sticking around for a few more months to help determine my successor and ensure they are well placed to lead the APAC Policy team on to even greater success." As of now, Meta has yet to reveal any details regarding Milner's successor or potential candidates for the role. His exit comes at a pivotal moment for Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as governments across Asia—including India, Australia, South Korea, and various Southeast Asian nations—implement stricter regulations aimed at holding technology companies accountable for the content they host. Regulators are increasingly focused on issues like misinformation, child protection, and the influence of major tech companies in the digital advertising space, placing Meta under intense scrutiny. Throughout his tenure, Milner played a vital role in navigating these challenging political environments, often representing the company in discussions with lawmakers and industry groups while staunchly defending its business practices. This leadership change underscores the escalating tensions between global technology firms and regional authorities. Analysts warn that the incoming policy chief will face significant challenges as countries in the Asia-Pacific region continue to push for more localized digital governance, potentially undermining the traditional borderless nature of social media platforms.
