Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is reportedly spearheading the development of a new mobile application designed for prediction markets, drawing inspiration from platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi. According to a recent report by The New York Times, a dedicated team has been assembled to create this innovative app, which is expected to initially function as a game-like platform for users to forecast outcomes in various domains such as sports, elections, entertainment, and technology. Instead of traditional monetary stakes, users will earn points, rankings, badges, and rewards through their predictions. Nevertheless, there are indications that Meta may eventually incorporate real-money betting options in the future. Internally referred to as "Arena," this app is intended to stand alone and establish its unique identity, distinct from Meta's existing social media platforms. To enhance user engagement, Meta plans to leverage its extensive user base across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger for promoting Arena. This initiative is currently a top priority for the company, with a focus on tapping into emerging social behaviors. It's important to note that this isn't Meta's first foray into prediction markets; the company previously launched a crowdsourced app named Forecast in 2020, which ultimately shut down in 2022 due to lackluster user engagement. The prediction market sector is witnessing a resurgence, with platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi reportedly generating over $130 billion in 2026. Alongside Arena, Meta is also said to be developing another standalone app called Meta Photos, which aims to utilize artificial intelligence to create new forms of media content, including images and visual effects. This indicates Meta's ambition to explore multiple innovative products beyond its primary social media offerings. However, as both applications are still in development and experimental stages, their official launch timelines remain uncertain.
