Meta has unveiled an exciting update to its Reels translation feature on Instagram and Facebook, allowing creators to dub their videos in Hindi and Portuguese, enhancing accessibility for a broader audience. Previously, this functionality was available only in English and Spanish, which was introduced back in August. In a video shared on Instagram, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, highlighted the importance of this feature, stating, "Most of the videos on Instagram are in a language you don't speak, but that doesn't mean you aren't interested in them." Demonstrating the feature, he dubbed the remainder of his video in Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese using Meta's AI technology. Meta’s innovative approach utilizes artificial intelligence to replicate the creator’s voice, ensuring that the translations maintain an authentic feel. Additionally, creators can activate a lip-syncing option, which aligns the translated audio with the creator's mouth movements, further enhancing the viewer's experience. To inform viewers about the use of AI in the translations, Reels dubbed with this technology will carry a label stating, "Translated with Meta AI." Viewers will have the flexibility to toggle translations on or off or even opt to watch the Reels in their original language. This is done by accessing the settings through a three-dot menu, navigating to the audio and language section, and selecting "Don't translate." While platforms like YouTube have also begun dubbing videos in multiple languages, Instagram's implementation stands out due to its unique AI label and the explicit consent process for both creators and viewers. Unlike YouTube, which allows creators to disable auto-dubbing, Instagram offers a streamlined option for viewers to manage their preferences regarding AI-generated content. The new translation feature from Meta AI is available for creators with more than 1,000 followers and for all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is operational. As creators upload their Reels, they will encounter a new option titled "Translate your voice with Meta AI," allowing them to decide whether to enable lip-syncing before publishing their videos. Once a translation is set, they will receive a notification to review and approve the content before it goes live.
