Meta bought some help in its quest for humanoid robots

Meta has intensified its efforts in the field of robotics by acquiring Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a San Diego-based startup specializing in robotic intelligence. Xiaolong Wang, one of ARI's co-founders, announced the acquisition in a post on X, confirming that the startup, which consists of roughly 20 employees, is now part of Meta's growing initiatives in the robotics sector. The acquisition was also verified by AIX Ventures, the initial institutional investor in ARI since its inception last May. A spokesperson from Meta highlighted the significance of ARI, stating, "We acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a company at the frontier of robotic intelligence designed to enable robots to understand, predict, and adapt to human behaviors in complex and dynamic environments." ARI focuses on developing advanced AI models that will enhance the capabilities of humanoid robots. Nick Crance, a partner at AIX Ventures, elaborated on the startup's mission, emphasizing its commitment to achieving high-precision dexterity and manipulation in robotics. These skills are essential for robots to effectively interact with their surroundings, whether in industrial applications or in domestic settings. The leadership at ARI includes two highly regarded roboticists. Xiaolong Wang, who has a background as a researcher at Nvidia, is also a faculty member in electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Lerrel Pinto, who co-founded Fauna Robotics, currently serves as ARI's CEO and holds a professorship in computer science at New York University. Meta's acquisition of ARI signifies a broader trend in the robotics industry, where several startups, including Physical Intelligence and Genesis AI, are focusing on the intelligence aspect of robotics rather than just hardware development. These companies aim to create AI systems that empower robots to operate effectively across various environments. This move is part of Meta's strategic push into robotics, which began with the formation of a dedicated robotics group within its Reality Labs division in 2025. Since then, the company has brought in new leadership and expanded its hardware workforce for the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), which operates separately from Reality Labs but is increasingly integrated with robotics and AI hardware initiatives. Neither Meta nor AIX Ventures disclosed the financial details of the acquisition.
