Meta buys robotics startup to bolster its humanoid AI ambitions

Meta has announced its acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup at the forefront of humanoid robotics, for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move aims to enhance Meta's capabilities in robotic intelligence, enabling machines to understand and react to human behavior within complex environments. The entire ARI team, including its co-founders, is set to join Meta’s AI division, specifically within the Superintelligence Labs research group. ARI had previously secured seed funding from AIX Ventures, focusing on developing foundational models that empower humanoid robots to perform various tasks, including household chores. Xiaolong Wang, one of the co-founders, brings an impressive background as a former researcher at Nvidia and an associate professor at UC San Diego, recognized for his numerous accolades. His co-founder, Lerrel Pinto, also boasts a prestigious academic history, having taught at NYU and co-founded Fauna Robotics, which was acquired by Amazon last month. This acquisition is expected to significantly bolster Meta's ambitions in humanoid robotics. A spokesperson highlighted that the expertise of Wang and Pinto will be crucial in designing advanced models and capabilities for robot control and self-learning. Meta has been exploring humanoid robotics technology for several years. A leaked internal memo revealed the company's aspirations to create consumer-oriented robots, integrating AI models and hardware. Regardless of whether Meta ultimately produces a consumer humanoid product, many AI experts believe that achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) will necessitate training AI in real-world scenarios, where robots learn through hands-on experience. The ARI acquisition, alongside the recent Fauna Robotics deal, illustrates a rapidly evolving industry, with economic forecasts ranging dramatically—from Goldman Sachs' estimate of $38 billion by 2035 to Morgan Stanley's prediction of $5 trillion by 2050—highlighting the immense potential and uncertainties that accompany this burgeoning technology.
