Meta’s campaign to promote scrutinized youth safety features involved hundreds of family influencers

Meta has initiated a significant promotional campaign, collaborating with a network of family and mom influencers to advocate for its teen safety tools. This initiative comes in response to increasing concerns from parents, online safety advocates, and watchdog groups about the effectiveness of these safety features. Influencer Sadie Robertson Huff, known for her role in 'Duck Dynasty,' emphasized in an October 2024 post that Instagram’s Teen Accounts settings provide peace of mind as she considers her young child eventually joining the platform. Leroy Garrett, another lifestyle influencer, also encouraged parents to explore Instagram's Teen Accounts, describing them as offering substantial protection for their children. Reports indicate that Meta has sponsored hundreds of influencers, along with doctors and psychologists, over the past two years to promote its safety features while portraying itself as a responsible entity committed to the wellbeing of young users. In addition to influencer partnerships, Meta has hosted engaging 'Screen Smart' events aimed at educating influencers about its safety measures. Some participants have since advocated for legislation that would shift the responsibility of verifying user ages from individual platforms to app stores. Despite this marketing push, Meta is under intense scrutiny due to recent legal challenges, including rulings in California and New Mexico where the company was held liable for the harmful effects of its platforms on young users. The Tech Transparency Project reported that many safety tools, including Instagram’s Teen Accounts, may not function as effectively as advertised, potentially exposing teens to inappropriate content. Meta has responded by updating its content restrictions for younger users. With ongoing investigations and calls for accountability, such as the forthcoming Senate Judiciary Committee hearing featuring Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the pressure on the company to ensure a safe online environment for youth is mounting. Meta's partnerships with influencers are designed to increase awareness of their safety tools, which include default privacy settings and content restrictions for teen users, as well as parental control features. A spokesperson for Meta defended these efforts, arguing that critics of the campaign are more interested in headlines than in genuinely protecting families. The promotional content has reached nearly 300 million views on Instagram since 2024, highlighting the extensive reach of Meta’s marketing strategy. However, there are concerns that the company’s influence over social media algorithms could result in skewed perceptions of the effectiveness of its safety features. As the discourse surrounding online safety continues to evolve, Meta’s collaborations with influencers and advocacy for legislative changes remain central to its public relations strategy.
