Meta has made a significant move by appointing Alan Dye, the former head of UI design at Apple, as its new chief design officer. In his new role, Dye will oversee the Creative Studio, a newly established team within the Reality Labs Division, tasked with shaping the company's next-generation products such as smart glasses and VR/AR devices. Dye's expertise will not only focus on design but also on advancing AI capabilities within Meta's smart devices. CEO Mark Zuckerberg elaborated on this direction through a detailed post on Threads, emphasizing the company's ambition to "treat intelligence as a new design material". He highlighted that the Creative Studio aims to blend design, fashion, and technology to create more human-centric experiences. Zuckerberg expressed his vision for elevating design at Meta, aiming to assemble a talented group that combines craftsmanship, creative insight, systems thinking, and significant experience in developing iconic products that merge hardware and software. In addition to Dye, Meta has also recruited Billy Sorrentino from Apple, another key player in the design team known for his contributions to the iOS 26 Liquid Glass design. The efforts will be bolstered by Pete Bristol’s industrial design team and Jason Rubin’s metaverse design team, further illustrating Meta's strategy of attracting top talent from rival companies. Recent hires from OpenAI and now designers from Apple signify Meta's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the tech industry, particularly as AI continues to dominate the conversation.
