Meta launches new teen safety features and removes 635,000 accounts that sexualize children

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has rolled out new safety measures designed to enhance protections for teenage users on its platforms. These initiatives include providing information about accounts that send messages to teens and introducing a streamlined process for blocking and reporting inappropriate accounts with just a single tap. In a recent announcement, the company revealed that it has taken down approximately 635,000 accounts involved in leaving sexualized comments or soliciting explicit images from adult-managed accounts belonging to children under 13. Specifically, 135,000 accounts were identified for commenting inappropriately, while another 500,000 were associated with accounts that engaged in misconduct, as stated in a blog post from Meta. These actions come at a time when social media platforms are under increased scrutiny regarding their impact on the mental health and welfare of younger users. There is a pressing need to protect children from predatory individuals and scammers who seek to exploit them for explicit content. Meta reported that teen users have actively blocked over a million accounts and raised concerns about another million after receiving a safety notice that encourages caution in private messaging. Earlier this year, Meta began experimenting with artificial intelligence to verify the ages of users on Instagram, which is intended for individuals aged 13 and older. If it is determined that a user is misrepresenting their age, their account will be converted to a teen account, which comes with stricter privacy settings. For instance, teen accounts are automatically set to private, and messaging capabilities are limited to users they follow or are connected with. In a significant policy change, Meta has also made all teen accounts private by default starting in 2024. The company faces ongoing legal challenges from multiple U.S. states that accuse it of endangering young users and contributing to a mental health crisis among youth due to its design choices that promote addictive behaviors on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
