Meta will now allow parents to see the topics their child discussed with Meta AI

Meta has rolled out an important update, enabling parents to monitor the topics their teenagers are discussing with Meta AI across platforms like Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. This new feature, accessible through the supervision tools, includes an 'Insights' tab that reveals the subjects their teens have engaged with over the past week. Topics range widely, covering areas such as 'School,' 'Entertainment,' 'Lifestyle,' 'Travel,' 'Writing,' and 'Health and Wellbeing.' Once parents navigate to a specific topic, they can delve deeper into its subcategories. For instance, the 'Lifestyle' category includes fashion, food, and holidays, while 'Health and Wellbeing' encompasses fitness, physical health, and mental health. Currently available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, and Brazil, this feature is expected to expand globally in the weeks ahead. Meta first hinted at these insights in October as part of a broader initiative to equip parents with tools to guide their teens' interactions with AI. Additional features previously previewed aimed to allow parents to restrict access to certain AI characters or disable them altogether. However, in January, Meta decided to suspend teen access to these AI personas worldwide, citing the need to create a safer version tailored specifically for younger users. This decision came shortly before a trial in New Mexico, where Meta faced accusations of not doing enough to protect minors on its platforms. The company ultimately lost this case, marking a significant legal precedent regarding child safety accountability. In light of these developments, Meta is also providing parents with suggested conversation starters to foster open discussions about their teens’ experiences with AI, alongside the formation of a new AI Wellbeing Expert Council aimed at guiding the development of AI products for younger audiences.
