Meta is rolling out exciting new features for its Community Notes, a crowdsourced fact-checking initiative that debuted in the U.S. earlier this year. Users will now receive notifications when they interact with posts on Facebook, Instagram, or Threads that have been updated with a Community Note. Additionally, users have the ability to request a note or provide ratings on the helpfulness of existing notes. As part of this testing phase, Meta’s Chief Information Security Officer, Guy Rosen, shared insights on X about the growth of the program. Over 70,000 contributors have generated more than 15,000 notes, with only 6% making it to publication. This statistic, while promising, highlights the challenge of reaching consensus in a market like the U.S., which boasts hundreds of millions of users across various platforms. The Community Notes system resembles Twitter’s (now X’s) program launched in 2021, which faced criticism from researchers for its inability to effectively flag misinformation quickly and widely. This raises questions about whether Meta's approach will yield better results. Like its counterpart, Community Notes are applied to posts when users with differing opinions reach an agreement on the content. While this approach aims to expose misinformation and clarify misleading posts, critics argue that achieving consensus can be challenging. The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), a nonprofit focused on digital rights, has raised concerns about the speed at which misinformation can spread before being rectified. A study highlighted by the CDT revealed that over 70% of accurate notes regarding U.S. election misinformation were never displayed to users. Furthermore, the organization questions the effectiveness of this system in visually driven platforms like Instagram and Reels, or how it will function within private groups on Facebook. They advocate for Meta to implement metrics that track the visibility of corrected information and to make Notes data publicly accessible to promote transparency. The CDT also urged the company to reconsider its decision to halt fact-checking on the platform.
