Meta staff protest over activity tracking tool amid privacy concerns

Employees at Meta across the United States are voicing their concerns over a newly proposed mouse-tracking software designed to monitor their activities on work devices. This initiative has sparked protests, with staff members distributing flyers in various locations within the offices, including meeting rooms, vending machines, and restrooms. The flyers encourage employees to join an online petition opposing the surveillance system, highlighting a growing unease regarding workplace monitoring and privacy issues. One particularly striking phrase from the flyer describes the company as an "Employee Data Extraction Factory," indicating that workers feel as though they are being treated as mere data sources rather than valued individuals. These protests come in the wake of Meta's announcement that it plans to reduce its U.S. workforce by nearly 10%, affecting around 8,000 employees. Many workers are increasingly anxious that the implementation of such monitoring tools could lead to the automation of their roles, raising fears about job security and future employment. In defense of the mouse-tracking software, a Meta spokesperson, Andy Stone, stated that the tool is essential for developing AI agents that assist users in completing everyday tasks. Stone emphasized the need for real-world usage examples, such as mouse movements and button clicks, to effectively train these models. In addition to the protests in the U.S., some Meta employees in the UK have banded together to form a labor union, supported by the United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW), which is affiliated with the Communications Workers Union. Organizer Eleanor Payne has publicly criticized Meta's recent workplace policies, particularly the increased surveillance, job cuts, and the potential implications of training AI systems that might endanger employees' job security.
