Meta will let some job candidates use AI in their coding interviews

In a groundbreaking move, Meta is set to permit job candidates to utilize AI assistants during coding interviews, a practice that could redefine traditional hiring protocols. This initiative, first reported by 404 Media's Jason Koebler, has been confirmed by Meta and is designed to reflect the real-world environments that future employees will encounter. According to an internal message board announcement, Meta is developing 'AI-Enabled Interviews' that will grant candidates access to AI tools, thereby making the interview process more aligned with current developer practices. The company believes this approach will also mitigate the effectiveness of AI-assisted cheating. Meta is actively seeking 'mock candidates' from within its workforce to trial this innovative interview format. As stated in their message, the development of interview questions is an ongoing process, and feedback from participants will shape future strategies for hiring at the company. A spokesperson for Meta emphasized the organization's focus on integrating AI to assist engineers in their daily roles. This initiative is a clear extension of that commitment and showcases how the company is exploring ways to incorporate AI tools into the candidate evaluation process. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has previously discussed the potential of AI in software development, predicting that by 2025, AI could serve as an effective mid-level engineer capable of writing code autonomously. This progressive approach sets Meta apart from much of the tech industry, where other companies, like Amazon, have discouraged the use of AI in interviews. Initially, AI research lab Anthropic also advised candidates against using AI tools but later reversed that guideline. In addition to leveraging AI in interviews, Meta plans to employ these technologies in other recruitment tasks, including automating coding skill assessments and generating interview questions. A spokesperson highlighted that while AI will streamline recruiting processes, the essential human element of interviews will remain intact.
