Meta urges Australia to rethink under-16 social media ban after blocking over 500,000 accounts

Meta has made a renewed appeal to the Australian government to reconsider its recent legislation prohibiting social media access for users under the age of 16. This call comes on the heels of the tech giant's action to block more than 550,000 accounts on its platforms in just a month. The Online Safety Amendment Act 2024, which took effect on December 11, restricts access to ten major social media platforms, including Meta's Instagram, Alphabet's YouTube, Bytedance's TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat, and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Between December 4 and 11, Meta reported removing approximately 330,000 accounts on Instagram, 173,500 on Facebook, and nearly 40,000 on Threads, all believed to belong to users under 16. In a recent blog post, Meta emphasized its commitment to comply with the new law while urging the Australian government to engage in meaningful discussions with the tech industry. The company suggested that rather than imposing blanket bans, authorities should incentivize platforms to enhance safety and privacy measures for young users. To address age verification, Meta has partnered with the OpenAge Initiative to introduce tools known as Age Keys. These tools allow users to verify their age through methods such as government-issued identification and financial information. However, Meta pointed out that effective age verification must extend to app stores, as many teenagers use over 40 apps weekly, many of which do not prioritize safety or age verification. The company warned that without comprehensive measures, young users could easily find ways to bypass the ban, potentially leading to a 'whack-a-mole' scenario where new platforms emerge to fill the gap left by the restricted apps. Since the law's implementation, many teens have reported using alternative platforms not covered by the ban, such as Yope, Lemon8, and Discord. Others have resorted to using VPNs or their parents' accounts to access social media. Reddit has also raised concerns regarding the ban, arguing that it limits political discourse for young people, which could have implications for civic engagement as they mature. In its legal challenge against the Australian government, Reddit highlighted the importance of allowing teenagers to participate in age-appropriate community discussions. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended the ban as a measure to empower families and protect children from harmful online content. He stated that the legislation aims to shift the onus of responsibility for teen social media usage from parents to technology companies. The implications of Australia’s ban may resonate beyond its borders, as countries worldwide grapple with the impact of social media on youth mental health. Concerns have been raised by figures such as U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, linking social media use to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among adolescents. As the conversation surrounding the mental well-being of young users continues, movements advocating for stricter smartphone regulations are gaining momentum globally, with various organizations emerging in different countries to limit children's access to technology. Experts like NYU professor Jonathan Haidt advocate for delaying smartphone access until at least age 14 and social media use until 16. While the Australian government's ban seeks to foster long-term mental health benefits, reactions from the youth have been mixed, with some expressing feelings of isolation and others adapting positively to the changes.
