Meta adds Hindi AI translation for Reels on Instagram and Facebook

Meta is taking a significant step toward enhancing cross-cultural communication on its platforms by introducing AI-driven translation capabilities for Reels in Hindi and Portuguese. This update follows the successful launch of the feature in August, which initially supported English and Spanish, allowing creators on Instagram and Facebook to connect with a broader audience. The new functionality automatically translates creators' voices and captions into selected languages, complete with synchronized lip movements to match speech. This initiative is part of Meta's strategy to bolster its international presence, particularly in India and Brazil, two of its largest markets for content creation. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, emphasized the importance of breaking language barriers, stating, "We believe there are lots of amazing creators out there who have potential audiences who don’t necessarily speak the same language." Creators can easily enable this feature by choosing "Translate your voice with Meta AI" prior to sharing their Reels. This allows them to review and adjust the translated content, select the desired languages, and refine the dubbing to ensure a seamless viewing experience. For viewers, the update offers automatic translation of Reels into their preferred language, facilitating understanding of content that may have originated in a different language. Meta has also announced plans for additional AI-powered translation tools set to debut shortly, with Facebook Reels already supporting translations for multiple speakers. Moreover, Instagram is expected to receive similar capabilities soon. In addition to voice translations, Meta is introducing options for translating on-screen text and captions, which will be particularly beneficial for users watching videos without sound. The company is also enhancing its dubbing technology to preserve the original tone of creators' voices while improving lip-sync accuracy for a more authentic viewing experience. This expansion of features comes in the wake of YouTube's recent enhancements to its own translation tools, highlighting the growing competition in this space.
