Meta partners up with Arm to scale AI efforts

In a significant move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Meta has partnered with semiconductor design firm Arm. This collaboration aims to enhance the social media giant's AI systems amidst an expansive infrastructure upgrade. As part of the agreement, Meta will transition its ranking and recommendation systems to Arm's Neoverse platform, which has recently been optimized specifically for AI applications in cloud environments. Santosh Janardhan, Meta's head of infrastructure, emphasized the transformative power of AI, stating, "AI is transforming how people connect and create." He added that the partnership with Arm will enable Meta to scale its innovations effectively to the vast audience of over 3 billion users across its various platforms and technologies. Traditionally recognized for its mobile CPU architecture, Arm is now shifting focus to highlight its strengths in low-power GPU offerings, which have often been eclipsed by competitors like Nvidia. Arm's CEO, Rene Haas, stated, "AI's next era will be defined by delivering efficiency at scale," underscoring the synergy between Arm’s performance-per-watt leadership and Meta’s AI advancements. This multi-year collaboration emerges as Meta embarks on an ambitious project to vastly expand its data center infrastructure to meet the growing demand for AI services. One notable initiative, dubbed "Prometheus," is slated to launch by 2027, aiming to bring multiple gigawatts of power online. Currently, construction is underway in New Albany, Ohio, where a 200-megawatt natural gas project is being developed to support the energy needs of this endeavor. Additionally, Meta is establishing a data center campus, referred to as "Hyperion," on a sprawling 2,250-acre site in northwest Louisiana. This facility is projected to deliver 5 gigawatts of computational power upon completion, with construction expected to progress until at least 2030, although some sections may become operational sooner. Importantly, this partnership is distinct from recent AI infrastructure deals, as Arm and Meta will not be exchanging ownership stakes or significant physical assets. In contrast, Nvidia has been aggressively investing in the AI space, committing $100 billion to OpenAI and making substantial investments in other AI firms like Elon Musk's xAI and the French lab Mistral. Meanwhile, AMD has also entered the fray, pledging to provide OpenAI with 6 gigawatts of computing capacity and offering stock options as part of the agreement.
