Meta and Anduril defense startup partner on VR, AR project intended for U.S. Army

In a significant move for defense technology, Meta has joined forces with Anduril, the startup established by Palmer Luckey, to develop advanced virtual and augmented reality devices aimed at supporting the U.S. Army. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for Meta as it seeks to provide innovative technology to governmental agencies while reuniting with Luckey, who previously sold his Oculus VR business to the company for $2 billion in 2014. Their relationship has been complex; Luckey notably mentioned in 2019 that he felt he was dismissed from Meta without clear reasons, hinting that his political donations may have influenced the decision. With Donald Trump’s recent re-election, tech leaders like Mark Zuckerberg have been proactive in courting the administration by adjusting policies, including content moderation. Meta has also been promoting its open-source Llama AI models to government bodies, asserting its commitment to defense and national security initiatives. "Meta has dedicated the past decade to advancing AI and AR technologies that will define the future of computing," stated Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "We are excited to collaborate with Anduril to deliver these innovations to the brave service members safeguarding our nation." Earlier this year, Anduril took over Microsoft’s AR headset program for the Army, and now the two companies are pursuing an Army contract worth up to $100 million for VR devices. Their project, named EagleEye, aims to enhance soldiers' sensory capabilities through advanced sensors. Regardless of the outcome of this contract, the partnership is set to proceed, with both firms emphasizing its potential to bolster national security and save the military significant costs by leveraging high-performance technologies originally designed for commercial use. Luckey expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the unique impact dual-use technology can have on American defense capabilities. Additionally, Anduril has recently collaborated with OpenAI on initiatives related to national security.
