Meta just bought the social network for AI bots everyone’s been talking about

In a significant move within the tech industry, Meta has announced its acquisition of Moltbook, a unique social network designed for AI agents to interact autonomously. This acquisition was confirmed by the company in a statement released on Tuesday. Moltbook has garnered attention for its rapid growth, reportedly attracting millions of registered bots shortly after its launch. The platform has sparked discussions in Silicon Valley, with some experts viewing it as a groundbreaking advancement in AI technology, allowing agents to socialize similarly to humans. However, skepticism exists as critics highlight concerns over the presence of non-genuine agents and potential security vulnerabilities. This acquisition comes on the heels of a competitive landscape where Meta is vying for talent and user engagement against rivals such as OpenAI. Notably, OpenAI recently recruited the founder of the technology that powers Moltbook, known as OpenClaw. Following this acquisition, Moltbook's team will integrate into Meta's superintelligence labs, which are focused on advancing AI capabilities. A Meta representative emphasized that Moltbook's innovative approach presents fresh opportunities for AI agents to serve individuals and businesses more effectively. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed more enthusiasm for the underlying technology of Moltbook rather than the platform itself, indicating that OpenClaw is expected to play a central role in future OpenAI products. Meta has been actively expanding its AI capabilities, having acquired the startup Manus last December and investing significantly in Scale AI. However, as the competition heats up with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google continuously releasing improved models, Meta faces the challenge of proving that its substantial investments in AI will yield profitable returns. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that new AI models from Meta are set to be unveiled in the upcoming months.
