Dune driving with Mercedes-Benz as it tests off-road systems

In a stunning showcase of engineering prowess, Mercedes-Benz has taken its pre-production electric GLC models to the expansive Dumont Dunes, situated about 100 miles from Las Vegas and nestled in the northern Mojave Desert. This unique environment, characterized by towering sand dunes formed over millennia, serves as a testing ground for the automaker's latest advancements in off-road technology. Earlier this year, the GLC was spotted at a German test track, cloaked in a distinctive black-and-white camouflage. Now, the focus is on refining its capabilities as it approaches production next year. While the physical components have received approval, developers are still fine-tuning the software and calibrating systems to ensure the vehicle excels in loose terrain. Although most GLC drivers may only encounter rough roads occasionally, the vehicle is designed to handle much more challenging conditions. With the optional air suspension system, the GLC can adjust its ground clearance to a remarkable 8.1 inches (206 mm) at low speeds and 7.2 inches (183 mm) even at highway speeds in the most demanding Terrain mode. This adaptation enhances its approach and departure angles to impressive figures of 21.4 degrees and 22.6 degrees, respectively. In a departure from traditional 4×4 design, the front and rear axles of the GLC are linked solely through an advanced electronic network, eliminating the need for a center differential. This innovative setup allows for rapid monitoring and adjustment of traction at each wheel. By leveraging the power of its dual electric motors, the GLC can swiftly distribute torque as required, providing a level of responsiveness that surpasses that of conventional combustion engine off-roaders. Even while the front motor can disengage for improved road efficiency, it remains engaged during Terrain modes to maximize performance.
