The memory shortage is driving up the cost of your next laptop

The ongoing memory shortage is reshaping the consumer electronics landscape, pushing up prices for laptops and gaming devices alike. With AI companies aggressively demanding more memory chips to support their advanced models, the market is feeling the squeeze. This shortage primarily affects DRAM and NAND memory chips, essential components for many electronic devices. Research firm IDC has warned of significant strain on the memory market, forecasting that supply growth will fall below historical averages this year. Major brands, including Valve and Framework, have already adapted their sales strategies in response to this crisis. Even tech giant Apple has acknowledged the impact of supply chain challenges on its profit margins. Concerns about the shortage have escalated, with industry leaders coining the term "RAMageddon" to describe the situation. Lenovo's CEO, Yang Yuanqing, indicated to Reuters that he anticipates pressure on PC sales. Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, went so far as to suggest that relief may not arrive until 2028. In light of this crisis, Dell has adjusted its pricing for devices significantly, increasing costs for models equipped with 32GB of memory by $130 to $230. HP is also preparing to implement price hikes across all product lines as a direct result of the memory shortage. Smaller manufacturers are feeling the heat more acutely, with Framework raising its prices multiple times in recent months. Corsair, facing its own challenges, had to cancel preorders of DRAM kits after mispricing them, only to raise prices shortly after. The gaming sector isn't exempt from these issues either. Valve has warned that its popular Steam Deck may experience intermittent stock shortages due to memory constraints. Furthermore, the company is reconsidering the pricing and release timelines of its upcoming gaming devices, including the Steam Machine and VR headset. The situation may soon affect larger companies as well; reports suggest that Sony is contemplating delaying the launch of its next PlayStation, while Nintendo is considering a price increase for the anticipated Switch 2. While some companies may choose to absorb the costs and maintain their prices, many industry leaders are vocal about the ongoing challenges. Elon Musk referred to a "chip wall" during Tesla's earnings call, and Tim Cook of Apple noted significant price increases in memory during his company's financial update. The crux of the issue lies in the fundamental economics of supply and demand. Crucial memory types include DRAM and NAND, key for consumer devices, and HBM, which is vital for training AI models. The memory market is dominated by three major players: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, who are also involved in HBM production. As AI companies continue to invest heavily in chip acquisition, they are driving prices up and influencing supply allocation. With SK Hynix already securing demand for its entire 2026 production and Micron predicting continued supply shortages, the outlook for the memory market remains bleak. For consumers looking to build their own PCs, navigating this turbulent market will be a formidable challenge.
