Mem0 raises $24M from YC, Peak XV and Basis Set to build the memory layer for AI apps

Taranjeet Singh, an entrepreneur with a history of launching six startups, is now focused on his most ambitious venture yet: Mem0. This innovative startup addresses a significant gap in AI technology— the ability for large language models to remember past interactions like humans do. Unlike human conversations that can easily resume after interruptions, AI models typically reset and forget previous exchanges. Mem0 aims to change that dynamic. Singh describes Mem0's unique offering as a "memory passport," enabling users to carry their AI memories across various applications, similar to how email or login credentials work today. Founded in January 2024, the company has successfully raised $24 million, which includes $3.9 million from earlier seed funding and a substantial $20 million in Series A financing. The Series A round was led by the AI-focused Basis Set Ventures, with contributions from existing backers such as Kindred Ventures and Y Combinator, along with new investors including Peak XV Partners and the GitHub Fund. Noteworthy angel investors in this round include tech leaders like Dharmesh Shah from HubSpot, Scott Belsky, and others. Mem0 is making impressive strides in the AI landscape, with its open-source API now recognized as the most widely adopted memory framework for AI developers. Recently, it has garnered over 41,000 stars on GitHub and achieved more than 13 million downloads of its Python package. The startup's growth is evident, with API calls skyrocketing from 35 million in Q1 2025 to an astonishing 186 million by Q3, reflecting a consistent monthly growth rate of around 30%. Furthermore, more than 80,000 developers have registered for its cloud service, which now processes more memory operations than any other provider and serves as the exclusive memory provider for AWS's new Agent SDK. Before launching Mem0, Singh was based in Bangalore, India, where he began his career as a software engineer for Paytm and later played a key role in Khatabook as its first growth engineer. Quitting his job in late 2022, he quickly capitalized on the ChatGPT trend by creating an early GPT app store that attracted over a million users. This experience led to the development of Embedchain, an open-source project designed for indexing and syncing unstructured data, which also gained traction in the developer community. Singh's persistent outreach to Silicon Valley founders and investors paid off when he managed to secure meetings that would ultimately lead him to the U.S., where he partnered with his co-founder and CTO, Deshraj Yadav, a former Tesla Autopilot AI Platform leader. Together, they previously worked on EvalAI, an open-source alternative to Kaggle. Initially, while experimenting with Embedchain, the duo launched a meditation app that resonated with users but highlighted the need for contextual memory. This feedback prompted them to pivot their focus entirely towards Mem0, aiming to solve the memory challenges in AI applications. The concept of AI memory is gaining traction, with major players like OpenAI also exploring persistent memory features for their platforms. Singh believes that while large AI organizations are developing memory systems, there is a lack of incentive for them to make these solutions portable and interoperable. He emphasizes the necessity for developers to have access to a neutral and open memory solution, such as Mem0, to create personalized user experiences in their applications. Mem0's framework allows developers to store and evolve user memory seamlessly across various models and platforms, making it compatible with notable frameworks like LangChain and LlamaIndex. Its versatility enables the creation of applications that enhance user interaction over time, from therapy bots to productivity tools. Investors like Lan Xuezhao from Basis Set Ventures recognize the foundational importance of memory in the future of AI and are committed to supporting Mem0 as it tackles this complex infrastructure challenge. Alongside Mem0, other startups are emerging in the memory space, indicating a growing interest in this pivotal aspect of AI development.
