Meghalaya signs LoI with Starlink to pilot satellite internet in remote hill regions

The government of Meghalaya has entered into a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink India to launch a pilot project aimed at providing satellite internet services in the state’s hard-to-reach areas. This initiative will primarily target vital sectors including education, healthcare, disaster response, and economic growth. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized that this collaboration is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to promote digital governance and enhance infrastructure. He stated, "In the last eight years, we have made significant advancements in infrastructure and technology, which have streamlined processes, reducing timeframes from 30 days to just 3. However, the challenge of connecting our most isolated schools and health facilities continues to persist." Starlink aims to deliver internet connectivity via a network of low Earth orbit satellites, which enables access without the need for traditional infrastructure like mobile towers or fiber optics. Sangma highlighted, "This partnership marks a crucial step towards closing the connectivity gap. The initiative is expected to facilitate better healthcare access, improve educational opportunities for students, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities." The Chief Minister also shared a vision to establish Meghalaya as a technology hub in the region. He remarked, "We are committed to transforming Shillong into an IT and technology center in the Northeast, which will create opportunities for our talented youth and foster a robust digital ecosystem for the future." While the potential benefits of Starlink's services are promising, the rollout in India is still pending regulatory approvals. The company has yet to receive the necessary satellite spectrum for commercial activities and must comply with security regulations, as well as develop ground infrastructure, including earth stations. Earlier this year, Gujarat's government also signed an LoI with Starlink to pilot similar satellite internet solutions for remote and underserved areas, focusing on enhancing digital services in tribal regions and improving connectivity for essential services.
