The '10x engineer' is old news. Surge's CEO says '100x engineers' are here.

The tech industry is witnessing a paradigm shift as the concept of the '10x engineer' is being overshadowed by the emergence of the '100x engineer.' This term, popularized by Edwin Chen, CEO of Surge, reflects a new era where artificial intelligence significantly amplifies the productivity of top-tier engineers. Chen, who built his company to a staggering $1 billion in revenue without any venture capital, asserts that the efficiency gains provided by AI could propel individual engineers to deliver results equivalent to those of a hundred standard engineers. "In today's landscape, some startups are already achieving revenues of $10 million with just a single founder. With AI streamlining their processes, reaching $1 billion is within reach for these solo entrepreneurs," he explained on the 20VC podcast. Surge is already proving to be more efficient than competitors like Scale AI, which earned $870 million in 2024 after several funding rounds. Chen attributes Surge's lean structure, which notably lacks a dedicated sales or public relations team, to its ability to maintain high efficiency. The notion of the '10x engineer' originated from a 1968 study on programming performance and gained traction through Peter Thiel's book, 'Zero to One.' Thiel emphasized that startups must aim for tenfold improvements over their competitors. Chen supports this idea, stating that many engineers can work two to three times faster or have significantly fewer distractions, cumulatively boosting their productivity to that elusive tenfold. However, Chen believes that with the integration of generative AI and advanced coding tools, the potential for productivity could skyrocket even further. He explained, "When you factor in the efficiencies from AI, the potential multiplier effect could lead to a hundredfold increase in productivity." While these AI coding tools have become integral to software development, they still require direction from skilled engineers who possess innovative ideas. Chen noted, "These tools alleviate much of the repetitive work, but they are most effective in the hands of those who already embody the attributes of a '10x engineer.'"
