Rare gifted word-learner dogs like to share their toys

Recent research from Eötvös Loránd University (ELU) has shed light on the fascinating world of gifted word learner (GWL) dogs, showcasing their remarkable abilities and playful nature. These dogs have been shown to pick up the names of new toys simply by overhearing their owners discuss them, a skill that continues to astonish researchers and dog lovers alike. In their latest study published in the journal Animal Cognition, the ELU research group found that GWL dogs not only exhibit a preference for novel toys but also enjoy sharing these treasures with their human companions. This social aspect appears to play a crucial role in enhancing the cognitive skills that make these dogs so special. Claudia Fugazza, an ELU co-author, has been delving into canine behavior as part of the Genius Dog Challenge for several years. Previous findings from the team revealed that these intelligent dogs can remember key sensory details about their toys, such as their appearance and scent, and effectively use this information when searching for named toys. Unlike ordinary dogs, GWL dogs can also recognize objects through verbal labels, showcasing their advanced cognitive capabilities. Moreover, last fall's research indicated that certain dogs could not only remember the names of their favorite toys but also apply these labels to entirely different objects that serve similar purposes. This remarkable skill, known as “label extension,” typically requires years of rigorous training for animals in captivity. However, these GWL dogs achieved this level of understanding simply through natural play with their owners, demonstrating an innate ability to classify toys by function, akin to a person referring to both a hammer and a rock as tools or a child recognizing that the term “cup” encompasses various types of drinking vessels. The findings from this study not only highlight the cognitive prowess of GWL dogs but also their ability to form social bonds through shared play, making them truly exceptional companions in the canine world.
