PetLibro’s new smart camera uses AI to describe your pet’s movements, and it’s adorable

PetLibro, a rising star in pet technology, has unveiled its newest innovation: the AI-powered Scout Smart Camera. This device is crafted to offer pet owners real-time insights into their furry friends' activities and behaviors, making it an exciting addition to the realm of pet monitoring. Much like other pet cameras available today, Scout keeps an eye on your pets in real-time and comes equipped with two-way audio, allowing owners to communicate with their pets, especially during mischievous moments. The accompanying mobile app not only gives users control over the camera's movements but also features automatic tracking, enabling Scout to follow pets as they move within its field of view. If a pet goes missing from sight, the camera can emit a chirping sound to help locate them. What truly distinguishes Scout from its competitors is its advanced AI technology. Utilizing pet recognition capabilities, the camera tracks various activities, including eating, drinking, and litter box usage, as well as simply moving across the screen. One of its fun features includes capturing spontaneous selfies of your pets, along with offering daily highlight clips stored in the cloud for up to 30 days. Moreover, Scout can recognize multiple pets, allowing owners to set up individual profiles for two pets through the mobile application. York Wu, the founder and CEO of PetLibro, shared insight into the challenges they faced during development. "Initially, our models struggled to differentiate between similar-looking pets, which is essential in homes with multiple pets. Traditional facial recognition fell short when pets moved quickly or shared similar traits. This prompted us to create a unique feedback-driven system that evolves with real-world usage," Wu explained to TechCrunch. As a pet owner, one of the standout features of Scout is its ability to provide charming descriptions of pet activities. One delightful example during testing described a pet as, "Zelda is calmly strolling across the shiny floor, her nose pointed forward as she explores her surroundings with gentle curiosity." How endearing! Another appealing aspect of the Scout camera is its capability to be shared with up to five family members and friends. Interested consumers can acquire this innovative device for $100, with various subscription plans available to unlock additional AI features. Options include a standard tier for $12 per month and a premium tier for $17 per month. In comparison, another pet camera brand, Furbo, offers a similar product with an AI "Nanny" assistant at a price of $210, along with a monthly subscription of $7. While PetLibro’s offering is priced competitively, it currently lacks a feature that alerts owners to barking, which Furbo provides. However, PetLibro is actively working on enhancing its device by adding barking and meowing detection. Additionally, while the Scout camera does not include a food dispenser, the company has plans to integrate AI functionalities with select feeders and fountains to stand out from the competition. It’s important to note that PetLibro’s privacy policy states that the camera collects image and video data to improve its AI features, adhering to cybersecurity standards. Similar practices are observed by other smart camera brands, such as Google Nest and Amazon Ring, which also gather user data to refine their services. Notably, the Scout device does not collect audio data for AI functionality.
