Microsoft has unveiled its latest innovation in artificial intelligence: Mico, a new animated avatar designed to enhance the user experience in Copilot’s voice mode. This announcement marks a significant shift in the branding of Microsoft’s Copilot AI, which the company describes as part of a "human-centered" initiative. According to Microsoft, the goal of this new approach is to create technology that genuinely serves people, rather than simply pursuing engagement or maximizing screen time. "We’re building AI that gets you back to your life and deepens human connection," the company stated. Mico has quickly drawn comparisons to Clippy, the iconic animated paperclip that assisted users in Microsoft Office since the 1990s. Embracing this nostalgia, Microsoft has even included an Easter egg that allows Mico to transform into Clippy, with Jacob Andreou, Corporate VP of AI at Microsoft, humorously noting that "Clippy walked so that we could run. We all live in Clippy’s shadow in some sense." While Clippy was designed to enhance interactions with the often cold Windows Help menus, Mico seems to pivot towards nurturing the parasocial relationships that users are building with large language models (LLMs). Unlike Clippy’s straightforward assistance—"It looks like you’re writing a letter, would you like some help?"—Mico aims to resonate more personally, suggesting instead, "It looks like you’re trying to find a friend. Would you like help?" The term "parasocial relationship" originated in the 1950s, describing the sense of familiarity that audiences feel towards media figures. Through consistent interaction, users can develop a sense of closeness to these personalities, despite the one-sided nature of the relationship. Mico's design appears to tap into this phenomenon, encouraging users to form deeper connections with their AI companions.
