Meet Bruce, the “beak-jousting” parrot

Introducing Bruce, the kea, an extraordinary alpine parrot hailing from New Zealand, who defied the odds after losing his upper beak in a young age accident. Despite this setback, Bruce has risen to become the leading male within his kea group, or "circus," located at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. Recent findings published in the journal Current Biology highlight Bruce's unique fighting technique, described as "jousting" with his remaining beak. His exceptional status has caught the attention of researchers, who first recognized his extraordinary abilities back in 2021. Scientists from the Kea Animal Minds Lab at the University of Auckland conducted a study comparing Bruce with other fully-beaked keas, noting his distinctive preening behavior. Bruce has ingeniously adapted to his condition by using small pebbles to help maintain his feathers, positioning them between his lower jaw and tongue to achieve effective grooming. While other keas occasionally play with pebbles, they do not utilize them for this purpose, indicating that Bruce developed this skill independently rather than through imitation. The researchers concluded that Bruce's behavior showcases the advanced problem-solving skills of keas and serves as a potential example of deliberate tool use. Consequently, Bruce's caregivers have opted not to provide him with prosthetics, believing that such interventions would cause unnecessary stress and disrupt his adaptive behaviors. In a fascinating twist on traditional contest theory, which posits that larger, more formidable opponents typically dominate conflicts, Bruce is proving otherwise. Over a four-week observation period, researchers noted 162 male-male interactions within his circus, with Bruce participating in 36 and emerging victorious in each encounter. His triumphs not only solidified his alpha position but were also accompanied by low stress hormone levels, preferential access to feeding stations, and even assistance from a non-mate in keeping his lower beak clean—a unique honor in his social structure.
