In a significant move, Medium's CEO Tony Stubblebine has announced that employees will have the opportunity to take a day off to join a nationwide general strike aimed at protesting the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This strike, which calls for "no work, no school, and no shopping," comes in response to the recent escalation of ICE raids in various U.S. cities, resulting in tragic fatalities, including two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis earlier this month. In a message shared via Slack with the Medium team, Stubblebine encouraged employees to engage in the strike in whichever way they choose. He emphasized that participation is completely voluntary, stating, "Whether or not you want to fully take the day away from work, or do a partial work day, or orient your work towards something that feels aligned to the goals of the strike, that is up to you." Stubblebine clarified that Medium respects individual political choices, affirming that the company does not intend to impose any political agenda on its employees. He acknowledged the pivotal role the platform plays in facilitating discussions around politics and culture, highlighting the importance of supporting staff in their decision to protest. To ensure operational continuity despite the day off, Stubblebine mentioned that Medium will work with relevant teams to prepare adequately. The decision reflects a broader sentiment within the tech industry, where leaders like Google DeepMind's Jeff Dean have voiced opposition to ICE. However, some tech executives have faced backlash for aligning with the Trump administration during this turbulent period. The ongoing debate has spurred a grassroots movement among tech employees, with over 500 individuals signing an open letter demanding that ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cease their operations in urban areas. Stubblebine expressed solidarity with this viewpoint, stating that Medium has a duty to clarify its stance, especially as other tech companies have reportedly contributed to the Trump campaign. He reiterated Medium's commitment to promoting diversity and truth, underscoring that the company's mission aligns with fostering a society that thrives when diverse voices are heard. In light of political actions that have threatened diversity initiatives, Stubblebine's message reinforces Medium's dedication to supporting its employees and the values they stand for.
