A recent incident involving a measles case at Idaho's busiest airport has raised significant health concerns, particularly in a state known for its low vaccination rates. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) confirmed that an individual infected with measles was present at Boise Airport on March 29, traveling between 1:30 AM and 7:40 AM. Health officials are actively alerting residents and travelers about potential exposure, as they work to contact those who shared flights with the individual. Symptoms of measles, which can manifest as fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, may appear within seven to 21 days following exposure. Typically, the onset of symptoms occurs around 11 to 12 days after infection. As a result, anyone who may have been infected during this airport visit could start experiencing initial symptoms over the weekend. The characteristic rash associated with measles usually develops two to four days after the initial flu-like symptoms, beginning at the head and spreading downward. Fever can escalate to 104°F or higher during this period. Moreover, individuals with measles are contagious four days prior to the appearance of the rash and continue to be so for four days afterward. Idaho's vulnerability to measles outbreaks is underscored by the state’s high rate of non-medical vaccination exemptions, the highest in the nation, contributing to a notably low vaccination coverage among kindergarteners. For the 2024-2025 school year, data showed that 15.4% of kindergarteners in Idaho had exemptions for the measles vaccine, with only 0.3% being for medical reasons and a striking 15.1% classified as non-medical exemptions.
