The 2026 Mazda CX-5, driven: It got bigger; plus, radical tech upgrade

ENCINITAS, Calif. — While the larger CX-90 and CX-70 models have recently attracted attention, the CX-5 remains a pivotal model for Mazda. This all-new version stands out as a global vehicle, differing from the CX-50, which was tailored specifically for the North American market. One of the most significant upgrades is the transition from a basic infotainment system to a cutting-edge, Google-based platform. This change marks Mazda’s commitment to advancing toward software-defined vehicles, setting the stage for future innovations, including an in-house hybrid model slated for release next year. The CX-5 is priced competitively starting at $29,990. In terms of dimensions, the new CX-5 is larger than its predecessor, measuring 4.5 inches longer and half an inch wider. It now spans 184.6 inches (4,689 mm) in length, 73.2 inches (1,859 mm) in width, and stands 66.7 inches (1,694 mm) tall. A notable increase in wheelbase to 110 inches (2,794 mm) enhances interior space significantly. The exterior design features a fresh light signature and a sculpted body that evokes a sense of luxury, reminiscent of the Range Rover aesthetic. Mazda’s signature Soul Red Crystal metallic paint (available for an additional $595) continues to dazzle, even on overcast days. In its previous update, Mazda elevated the interior quality of the CX-5, and this trend continues with a sophisticated design that complements the five available trim levels, each offering a $2,000 upgrade. However, current CX-5 owners may notice some changes that could be a mixed bag, as the evolution brings both enhancements and adjustments that may not resonate with everyone.
