Mastodon CEO steps down as the social network restructures

Eugen Rochko, the founder of Mastodon, a decentralized social network and competitor to X, has announced his resignation as CEO. This decision comes as the platform embarks on a significant transition to a non-profit structure, a change that aims to secure Mastodon's future. The restructuring marks a pivotal moment for the organization, which will now be overseen by a board of directors, featuring notable figures such as Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Mastodon's Community Director Hannah Aubry, who will be stepping down from her current role. With the new governance model, Mastodon is poised to broaden its business and mission without relying solely on one individual. Rochko, who has dedicated the past decade to building the platform, expressed the need for a break, acknowledging that the pressures of leadership had begun to weigh heavily on him. "Mastodon has become synonymous with my identity, and the stress of its success has led to burnout," he explained in an interview. His intention moving forward is to act as an advisor, allowing him to restore balance in his life. The revamped leadership team includes Renaud Chaput as Technical Director and Andy Piper as Head of Communications, among others. Currently, Mastodon employs ten full-time staff members. Rochko emphasized that the growth of Mastodon had surpassed what he could manage alone, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in the organization's future. Transitioning to a non-profit model opens new avenues for funding, particularly within Europe. The organization has already established its non-profit status in the U.S. and is working towards setting up a similar entity in Belgium, which will replace its previous German structure. To facilitate this shift, Mastodon has secured financial support from various investors, including Jeff Atwood and Craig Newmark. New Executive Director Felix Hlatky aims to engage more with industry stakeholders and enhance the platform's financial sustainability. He has expressed a desire to steer the conversation towards trust and safety issues while also focusing on technical infrastructure and product development. Notably, Mastodon will not pursue native interoperability with other decentralized networks, leaving that initiative to third-party developers. As Rochko steps back, he believes this structural change will help Mastodon maintain its identity as a platform independent from billionaire influence. With competitors like Bluesky gaining traction, Mastodon's mission to provide an alternative to corporate-controlled social media has never been more relevant. The platform currently boasts 10 million registered users, although monthly active participation has declined since its peak following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter. Rochko's vision remains clear: to offer a social media space that is not subject to the whims of wealthy individuals, advocating for a community-driven approach in the digital landscape.
