Mastodon, a decentralized alternative to X, plans to target creators with new features

Mastodon, the decentralized social media platform offering an alternative to mainstream apps like X and Threads, has unveiled plans to enhance its app for newcomers and attract content creators. This announcement, made on Wednesday, follows an expansion of Mastodon’s core development team over the past year and a half, which now includes professionals with expertise in web development, mobile applications, and backend technologies, along with a dedicated designer. The platform gained renewed attention after Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, now rebranded as X, in October 2022. Although Mastodon experienced occasional surges in user growth, it has faced challenges in retaining new users due to its complex account setup process. Unlike typical platforms where users create an account with just a username and password, Mastodon requires users to select a server to join, a step that often perplexes those unfamiliar with decentralized systems. Currently, estimates of Mastodon’s monthly active users range from approximately 750,000 to 1 million, depending on the source. To facilitate a smoother onboarding experience, Mastodon plans to simplify the initial setup process and promote smaller servers that embody the essence of decentralization. The organization emphasizes that the platform thrives when communities are spread across numerous independent servers, each with its unique character. New administrative tools are also on the horizon, aimed at assisting independent server operators with maintenance and moderation tasks, including the ability to utilize external blocklists. Additionally, Mastodon is exploring ways to engage more content creators, such as journalists, public figures, and institutions. Upcoming updates will feature a redesigned user profile that allows individuals to highlight their work, along with an enhanced content creation experience. Moreover, a new email notification system will enable users to follow updates from creators even without a Mastodon account, potentially broadening their audience. These new features come on the heels of previous updates, including Quote Posts—similar to those found on X—but with additional user controls, and a planned recommendation system dubbed Collections. This strategic pivot coincides with a leadership change at Mastodon; founder Eugen Rochko has stepped down as CEO, transitioning the platform to a nonprofit structure. Felix Hlatky has taken over as executive director, with Dr. Marius Rothermund joining as a legal advisor to help navigate the restructuring process across the U.S., Germany, and Belgium.
