Mastodon is making its decentralized social network easier to use with its latest revamp

Mastodon is undergoing significant enhancements aimed at making its decentralized social networking platform more user-friendly, particularly for those seeking alternatives to mainstream options like X or Threads. On Thursday, the company announced a redesign of user profiles, which is expected to appeal to both individual users and organizations. Since gaining attention following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, now known as X, Mastodon has become a popular choice for users looking for a decentralized platform. This unique structure allows for greater control over content moderation, as no single entity governs the algorithm. However, the initial process of joining and engaging with the platform can be more complex than traditional social networks, which has hindered user growth. Currently, Mastodon reports around 800,000 monthly active users, a decline from a peak of one million during the Twitter upheaval. To address these challenges, Mastodon has made strides in simplifying the user experience in recent months. Earlier this year, it improved the onboarding process and introduced features like Quote Posts and Collections, which serve as starter packs for new users. The latest update focuses on user profiles, introducing a streamlined design that enhances usability. The revamped profiles now feature a single “Activity” tab that combines posts and replies, similar to the layout used by X. Users can easily toggle the visibility of replies and boosts, Mastodon's equivalent of reposts, thanks to a new dropdown menu. Additionally, hashtags are prominently displayed at the top of the Activity tab, allowing for easier filtering of posts. Mastodon has also eliminated the previously unpopular pinned posts carousel, replacing it with a single featured pinned post, while offering a convenient “View all pinned posts” option for accessing additional content. To aid newcomers in understanding Mastodon handles, which differ from traditional formats by incorporating the server's name, an informative pop-up has been introduced. The update allows users to customize their profiles further by hiding certain tabs or replies, making it easier to showcase their content. Custom fields for links, pronouns, and other details are now arranged side-by-side, maximizing vertical space on the screen. Users can also modify these fields across mobile platforms, improving accessibility. Additional design tweaks aim to create a cleaner look, such as the removal of the “following you” badge and the relocation of the optional “personal note” to an overflow menu. Profile edits are now consolidated in account settings, allowing users to manage featured hashtags and links more efficiently. Furthermore, link verification—intended to establish user credibility without centralized control—has been made more accessible. The updated features will first roll out to the mastodon.social server and other servers that choose to adopt the nightly build, with a broader release expected in the upcoming Mastodon 4.6 software update in just a few weeks.
