Mastodon, the decentralized social media platform positioned as an alternative to mainstream applications like X and Threads, is looking to tackle one of the open social web's most pressing challenges: growing its audience. In its latest update, Mastodon has launched a new feature that allows users to create email newsletters, enabling writers to send their content directly to subscribers' inboxes, even if those individuals do not have a Mastodon account. This innovative approach could transform Mastodon from merely another competitor to major platforms into a viable option for creators looking to cultivate portable audiences on the decentralized web. By leveraging email—an enduring communication method—Mastodon aims to attract users who wish to support their favorite creators outside of traditional Big Tech environments without needing to join a new social network. The introduction of this feature comes with the rollout of Mastodon version 4.6, which also includes enhancements like updated user profiles and a new “Collections” feature that offers user-generated suggested follow lists, akin to the “Starter Packs” found on other social media sites. Users can now simply enter their email addresses to receive updates from creators. Mastodon originally limits posts to 500 characters, but server administrators have the flexibility to adjust this limit, allowing for the possibility of servers dedicated to longer-form content. The platform sees a significant opportunity for media organizations and independent journalists to join its ecosystem, particularly appealing to those who wish to offer anonymous subscription options to users who prioritize privacy. As accounts on Mastodon are portable, creators can retain their audience even if they decide to move to a different server. According to a blog post from the company, the email newsletter feature is currently aimed at institutional users, reflecting Mastodon's recent initiative to provide hosting and moderation services for organizations interested in operating their own servers. If embraced widely, this email functionality could enable Mastodon to expand its user base beyond the current 735,000 monthly active users and over a million accounts within the broader open social web, referred to as the fediverse. However, there are some limitations to consider. Creators interested in utilizing the newsletter feature must hold a designated role on their server with the appropriate permissions, necessitating either the establishment of their own server, selection of a Mastodon-hosted server, or a discussion with their current server operator. The company has opted not to make newsletters a standard feature, citing that sending emails can significantly increase the operating costs of a Mastodon server.
