Verizon outage disrupts calling and data services for wireless customers across the US

On Wednesday, Verizon customers across the United States faced significant disruptions as a widespread outage affected both calling and data services. The telecommunications giant confirmed the issue, stating that it was impacting wireless voice and data services, although the exact cause remained unspecified. In a social media update, Verizon assured its users that engineering teams were actively working to resolve the problem. "We understand the impact this has on your day and remain committed to resolving this as quickly as possible," the company noted. Reports of service issues began to flood in around noon Eastern Time, with outage tracker Downdetector recording over 175,000 complaints by 12:30 p.m. ET. Although the number of reports decreased slightly, nearly 57,000 issues were still reported by 3:30 p.m. ET. Many users found their devices displaying an "SOS" signal or similar messages indicating no available service. In major cities like New York, warnings were issued regarding potential disruptions to 911 calls, advising residents to utilize landlines or devices from other carriers if necessary, or to visit local emergency services in person during critical situations. Other significant areas affected included Washington D.C., Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and Portland, Oregon, with reports of disruptions coming from various locations nationwide. While Verizon faced these challenges, other carriers such as T-Mobile and AT&T quickly reassured their customers that their services were functioning normally. However, they acknowledged that users might experience difficulties reaching those on Verizon’s network. In the event of cellular outages, some phone companies recommend connecting to Wi-Fi for internet calling. For those without Wi-Fi access, alternatives like satellite messaging on newer iPhones may provide limited options for communication.
