France confirms data breach at government agency that manages citizens’ IDs

The French agency responsible for managing citizens' identity documents, including passports and national IDs, has confirmed a significant data breach. Announced on Wednesday, the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) revealed that sensitive information may have been compromised. The breach potentially involved personal details such as full names, birth dates and locations, as well as mailing and email addresses and phone numbers of a yet-to-be-disclosed number of citizens. ANTS is actively investigating the incident to understand its scope and impact, with efforts underway to notify those whose data has been affected. The agency detected the cyberattack on April 15, but has not disclosed how many individuals' data was involved. However, reports indicate that the breach may have impacted millions. A hacker has reportedly posted on a hacking forum, claiming to possess a database containing 19 million records that align with the type of stolen information outlined by ANTS. This post surfaced before the agency formally acknowledged the breach on April 20, raising questions about the timeline and the extent of the incident.
