Hackers stole Social Security numbers during Allianz Life cyberattack

In a concerning development, Allianz Life, a major U.S. insurance provider, has confirmed a significant data breach that occurred on July 16. The incident, which has now been reported to multiple U.S. states, revealed that hackers managed to steal a vast amount of personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, affecting a large portion of the company’s 1.4 million customers, along with financial professionals and some employees. The breach occurred through a social engineering attack, where cybercriminals deceived company helpdesks by impersonating employees in need of password resets. This tactic allowed the hackers to gain unauthorized access to Allianz Life's customer relationship database. Allianz Life's recent filing with the Texas attorney general outlined the stolen information, which included names, dates of birth, postal addresses, and Social Security numbers. A similar report to the Massachusetts attorney general confirmed the theft of Social Security numbers. When questioned about the specifics of the stolen data, Allianz Life spokesperson Brett Weinberg refrained from detailing the types of personal information compromised. However, he mentioned that the company plans to begin notifying those affected by August 1. The notification letters will provide tailored information to impacted individuals regarding the nature of the compromised data. This breach at Allianz Life adds to a worrying trend, as other insurance companies, including Aflac and Erie, have also reported similar attacks recently. Cybercriminals are increasingly employing social engineering tactics, leading to a surge in breaches across the industry. If you are a customer or employee of Allianz Life and have concerns about this incident, you are encouraged to reach out to the reporter securely via encrypted messaging.
