Two charged in $650 million global crypto scam that promised 300% returns

Federal authorities have taken decisive action against a vast cryptocurrency fraud scheme that swindled investors out of over $650 million. The indictment, revealed in the District of Puerto Rico, names Michael Shannon Sims, 48, from Georgia and Florida, and Juan Carlos Reynoso, 57, from New Jersey and Florida, as the masterminds behind OmegaPro, a global multi-level marketing operation that falsely promised its investors a staggering 300% return within 16 months through foreign exchange trading. Guy Ficco, the Chief of Criminal Investigations at the Internal Revenue Service, stated, "This case exposes the ruthless reality of modern financial crime. OmegaPro promised financial freedom but delivered financial ruin." Between 2019 and 2023, Sims, Reynoso, and their collaborators allegedly enticed thousands of individuals worldwide into purchasing "investment packages" using cryptocurrency. They misled investors into believing that their funds were securely managed by top forex traders, according to the Department of Justice. To bolster their scheme's credibility, the defendants showcased their lavish lifestyles on social media and organized extravagant events, including projecting the OmegaPro logo onto the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in Dubai. A promotional video on the company’s LinkedIn page features guests in formal attire enjoying the spectacle in Dubai. However, authorities contend that OmegaPro operated as a pyramid scheme. When the company later claimed it had been hacked, the accused informed victims that their investments had been transferred to a new platform known as Broker Group. Unfortunately, users found themselves unable to withdraw their funds from either platform. Both men are facing serious charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, each carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Justice Department, FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations, alongside international partners.
