A staggering theft of over $290 million in cryptocurrency occurred over the weekend, targeting Kelp DAO, a platform designed to help users earn returns on idle crypto assets. By Monday, LayerZero, one of the projects impacted by this breach, alleged that North Korean hackers were behind the audacious heist. This incident marks the largest cryptocurrency theft of the year, surpassing a previous hack at crypto exchange Drift, which saw approximately $285 million stolen in April. According to LayerZero's statement on social media platform X, the breach was executed by exploiting Kelp DAO through its LayerZero bridge, a mechanism that facilitates communication between different blockchains. The attackers capitalized on Kelp’s security setup, which failed to mandate multiple verifications for transaction approvals. This vulnerability allowed them to execute fraudulent transactions and misappropriate substantial funds. LayerZero indicated that initial evidence points to North Korean involvement, specifically highlighting a hacking group tied to the regime known as TraderTraitor. In a twist, Kelp DAO pushed back against these allegations, directing blame towards LayerZero for the security lapse. Over recent years, North Korean hackers, operating under the regime of Kim Jong Un, have gained notoriety for their successful cryptocurrency thefts. In 2022 alone, these hackers reportedly stole over $2 billion in digital assets. Cumulatively, since 2017, the total value of cryptocurrency they have pilfered is estimated to be around $6 billion.
