Polymarket saw $529M traded on bets tied to bombing of Iran

In a striking display of speculative trading, users on Polymarket have engaged in substantial betting concerning potential military action against Iran by U.S. and Israeli forces, resulting in a staggering $529 million worth of contracts traded. This data, reported by Bloomberg, highlights the scale of financial interest surrounding this geopolitical issue. An investigation by Bubblemaps SA revealed that a group of six newly registered accounts managed to secure a remarkable profit of $1 million by correctly predicting that the U.S. would launch strikes against Iran by February 28. Such activity raises eyebrows, as it could suggest the presence of insider knowledge influencing these bets. While these wagers may reflect general speculation about American military intentions, Bubblemaps CEO Nicolas Vaiman pointed out that the anonymity of Polymarket users, combined with information circulating regarding conflicts, can incentivize informed participants to make early moves. Earlier this year, Polysights, another analytics firm, noted a notable increase in bets regarding whether Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, would remain in power until the end of March. Addressing concerns that these types of bets could create a financial motive for acts of violence, Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour clarified that they refrain from listing markets directly associated with death. He emphasized that rules are established to ensure that participants cannot profit from outcomes involving fatalities, and that any fees collected from such bets would be refunded.
