Country music star Martina McBride's warning on 'terrifying' deepfake scam threat to artists, fans

Country music luminary Martina McBride has been vocal about the serious threats posed by AI-generated deepfakes, recently addressing these concerns at a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing and further elaborating at the CNBC AI Summit in Nashville. Alongside Morna Willens, the chief policy officer of the Recording Industry Association of America, McBride discussed the proposed bipartisan NO FAKES Act, which aims to safeguard artists' voices and likenesses from exploitation. McBride, a four-time Academy of Country Music Awards winner, emphasized the importance of her reputation and the trust her fans place in her words. "The thing that I'm most proud of in my career is my reputation and the fact that when I say something, my fans trust that it's the truth," she stated during her address to an audience of industry leaders. The potential for AI to replicate her voice and image raises significant concerns, particularly regarding the manipulation of her song lyrics that address serious issues like domestic violence. "At some point, you can't discern what I say and what someone manipulates me saying, and that's terrifying," she remarked. Willens highlighted the rapid evolution of AI technology, noting that her focus is entirely on understanding and addressing its implications. She engages with artists, managers, and lawmakers to determine appropriate regulatory measures, stating, "Is it regulation? I don't know, but we need some sort of guardrail around this technology." McBride also warned about the increasing risk of scams facilitated by deepfakes, recounting an incident where a fan nearly sold his home after being misled by a fraudulent AI-generated message purportedly from her. "AI is just going to make these kinds of scams even more dangerous," she cautioned. Willens refuted claims that the music industry is resistant to AI or technology, explaining that artists and labels have actively engaged with platforms like Apple Music and Spotify for years. However, she raised concerns about the lack of transparency from large AI companies, stating, "We can't tell if they're training on Martina's music, for instance. And if she doesn't know what they're training on, she can't enforce her rights." Addressing the potential impact of deepfakes on emerging artists, McBride warned that such technology could distort the connections between new artists and their fans, jeopardizing careers before they truly begin. She also highlighted the risks associated with retaliation, saying, "If you lose your house because a deepfake of an artist says they need money and you never get that money back, that's an angry situation." The implications of these technologies extend beyond financial loss, as McBride expressed her growing discomfort with the potential physical dangers posed by her public presence.
