Jim Cramer says next week's economic data will drive the markets

CNBC commentator Jim Cramer highlighted on Thursday that a relatively light earnings schedule in the coming week will draw investors' attention to several critical economic reports. Following a sell-off triggered by the Federal Reserve's hints at potential rate hikes, the stock market experienced a rebound. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by approximately 72 points, or 0.14%, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 saw gains of nearly 2% and about 1%, respectively. Semiconductor stocks played a significant role in this upswing, continuing the AI-driven market rally. Looking ahead, Cramer pointed to oil prices as a significant factor to watch. With an uptick in crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz and the conclusion of a U.S. Navy blockade, he anticipates that ongoing peace talks with Iran could lead to surprisingly lower oil prices. A sustained drop in oil prices, Cramer noted, would alleviate inflationary pressures and potentially pave the way for reduced interest rates. Carnival Corporation is set to report earnings before the market opens, offering insights into how the conflict in Iran may have impacted travel, alongside the implications of falling fuel prices on demand. While Cramer expressed a preference for Viking Holdings due to its upscale clientele and pricing power, he acknowledged Carnival as a well-managed entity. After market close, FedEx, a component of Cramer’s Charitable Trust, will release its earnings report. Cramer, who recently toured the company's Memphis headquarters, remains optimistic about CEO Raj Subramaniam's strategies for network optimization and cost management. He pointed out that FedEx has a track record of conservative forecasts, suggesting that any post-earnings dip could represent a buying opportunity. Additionally, homebuilder KB Home will report earnings, and Cramer is eager to hear management's perspective on how rising interest rates are affecting housing demand. He described the housing market as feeling 'dead in the water' and believes it warrants greater attention from central bankers. New-home sales figures are expected to provide further insight into the troubled housing market. Casey's General Stores will also hold an analyst day. While these events may not always influence stock prices, Cramer believes that investors continue to underestimate the impact of the convenience store’s business model in smaller towns. Micron Technology's report, which Cramer labeled as the week's 'most consequential quarter,' is highly anticipated, with expectations running high following the chipmaker’s impressive performance this year. He emphasized the need for Micron to significantly surpass expectations and update guidance to maintain its rally. The personal consumption expenditures price index report, the Federal Reserve's favored inflation metric, is due on Thursday morning. Cramer expressed optimism about comments from Fed Chair Warsh, suggesting a shift away from relying solely on historical inflation data. Darden Restaurants, which operates popular chains like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, is also reporting. Cramer noted the company's history of positive surprises and is optimistic about its prospects given the potential boost to consumer spending from declining gas prices. Lastly, FedEx Freight, recently separated from FedEx, will hold a business update call. Cramer remarked that the less-than-truckload shipping company is well-positioned to capitalize on the rising demand for e-commerce and cost-saving measures, as well as advancements in self-driving truck technology.
