Netflix drops its WBD bid, Block layoffs, Anthropic's DOD deadline and more in Morning Squawk

In the latest developments affecting the market, Netflix has officially withdrawn its bid to acquire certain assets from Warner Bros. Discovery. This decision came after WBD's board deemed a revised proposal from Paramount as more favorable, marking a significant turn in the ongoing acquisition saga that has captured Hollywood's attention. As the trading day begins, stock futures are experiencing a downward trend. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both faced declines in the previous session, and February is shaping up to be challenging for technology stocks. The Nasdaq has dropped approximately 2.5%, while the S&P 500 is down 0.4%. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has seen a modest gain of over 1%. In the realm of artificial intelligence, Nvidia's latest earnings report failed to invigorate investor enthusiasm, leading to a 5.5% drop in its stock price despite beating expectations. The excitement surrounding AI was also dampened for CoreWeave, a cloud infrastructure company, which saw its shares fall more than 10% in premarket trading after delivering underwhelming revenue projections. In a significant corporate restructuring move, Block announced it would lay off over 4,000 employees, nearly half of its workforce. CFO Amrita Ahuja indicated that these layoffs are intended to position the company for sustainable long-term growth. The market reacted positively, with Block’s shares jumping 20% in after-hours trading. CEO Jack Dorsey anticipates that many companies will follow suit as advancements in intelligence tools drive operational efficiencies. eBay also joined the wave of layoffs, cutting approximately 800 jobs, which constitutes 6% of its workforce. This reduction comes as eBay has made substantial investments in AI technology, as noted by CNBC’s Annie Palmer. In another sector, Anthropic is standing firm on its stance regarding the use of AI in defense applications. CEO Dario Amodei expressed that the company cannot ethically allow the Defense Department unrestricted access to its AI models. Anthropic is advocating for safeguards against the development of fully autonomous weapons and extensive domestic surveillance, which the Pentagon has not agreed to. As negotiations continue, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has set a deadline for Anthropic to comply with these demands, warning of potential repercussions, including being labeled a “supply chain risk.” Looking ahead, a report from McKinsey & Company predicts that women's investable assets in the U.S. are expected to nearly double from 2023 to 2030. Additionally, women stand to inherit a significant portion of the anticipated $100 trillion wealth transfer occurring through 2048, indicating a transformative shift in wealth control. Stephanie Link from Hightower Advisors emphasized the upcoming changes in wealth distribution in her comments to CNBC. As the market continues to evolve, staying informed on these developments will be crucial for investors navigating the current landscape.
