The memory crunch, Supreme Court rulings, 'inheritourism' and more in Morning Squawk

In today's economic landscape, investors are faced with a mix of developments that could influence market dynamics. As the week wraps up, stock futures are showing a downward trend. Following a brief surge, Wendy's stock did not maintain its momentum, and the S&P 500 closed yesterday with minimal change. Notably, the Nasdaq Composite experienced its longest losing streak since February, marking four consecutive days of declines despite a significant post-earnings rally from Micron. The Federal Reserve is intensifying its focus on inflation, with Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee emphasizing that the primary concern lies with inflation rather than employment. In contrast, New York Fed President John Williams anticipates a decline in inflation rates. This comes on the heels of data revealing that the core personal consumption expenditures price index rose by 3.4% year-over-year, the highest increase since late 2023. In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court ruled that Bayer cannot be held liable for state claims regarding cancer risks associated with its products. This 7-2 decision is a considerable win for Bayer and the administration, although it poses a setback for the Make America Healthy Again movement supporting Trump’s policies in the upcoming election cycle. Additionally, the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision allowed former President Trump to terminate a humanitarian program that had protected numerous Haitian and Syrian immigrants from deportation, overturning previous federal court rulings in New York and Washington, D.C. On the corporate front, JPMorgan Chase announced promotions within its ranks, elevating Doug Petno and Troy Rohrbaugh to co-presidents. This move represents a critical step in CEO Jamie Dimon’s succession strategy, with Petno overseeing the investment banking division and Rohrbaugh taking charge of consumer and community banking, succeeding the retiring Marianne Lake. Amid these corporate and legal shifts, luxury spending is projected to rebound this year. There is a growing trend of 'inheritourism,' where affluent families travel together, and Gen Z aligns their preferences with their parents. According to Bain & Co. and Altagamma, spending on luxury experiences is anticipated to increase by 3% to 7%, contrasting with a modest rise of 1% to 4% in luxury goods sales. This marks a potential end to two years of declining high-end retail sales.
