Cramer calls blistering rally in chip stocks 'worrisome.' How he's protecting his portfolio

Jim Cramer, the host of CNBC's "Mad Money," has expressed concerns about the recent explosive growth in semiconductor and AI-related stocks, suggesting it could signal potential trouble for the broader market. "We've been witnessing parabolic moves throughout the market recently," Cramer stated, describing these trends as alarming. His caution follows an unprecedented rally in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, known as the SOX, which achieved an astonishing 18 consecutive days of gains – the longest winning streak in its history. This period saw the index soar more than 47% before experiencing a pullback on Monday. Even with this recent decline, the index remains up by 37% for April, which could mark the second-best month in its history, only behind February 2000, right before the tech bubble burst. This surge has caught the attention of Wall Street, with analysts from Goldman Sachs noting that the index is currently trading about 50% above its 200-day moving average, the highest level since 2000. Additionally, Morgan Stanley has flagged semiconductor stocks as among the most overbought ever, suggesting a possible near-term correction. Cramer's broader concern lies in how widespread the rally has become, with numerous companies linked to AI infrastructure and data centers experiencing sharp increases in their stock prices. Companies like Advanced Micro Devices, Arista Networks, and Marvell Technology have all seen their shares rise by 50% or more since late March. Cramer remarked, "These types of moves worry me," emphasizing that such rapid gains can quickly reverse if market expectations exceed fundamental realities. He pointed to POET Technologies as a cautionary tale, as its stock plummeted following the cancellation of significant purchase orders by a key customer, highlighting how swiftly market sentiment can shift when expectations are misaligned with actual performance. In light of these developments, Cramer is not advising investors to retreat from the market entirely. Instead, he is promoting a more cautious strategy. "I don't want to overreact," he noted, while also indicating that his team has taken steps to adjust their portfolio. This includes trimming positions in stocks that have performed exceptionally well and resisting the allure of stocks that have experienced extreme price increases. Cramer mentioned that while some stocks, like Arm Holdings, present long-term investment opportunities, they may be better acquired during price corrections. His advice is straightforward: "Trim some winners…don’t chase the parabolic stuff…and let’s wait to see if we have a more benign pullback from these wild past few weeks."
